Fears & Phobias

What is a Phobia?

A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder marked by an extreme, irrational fear of a situation, object, creature, or place. People with phobias may avoid these triggers at all costs, even though the threat is often imagined. This irrational fear can severely impact daily life and may lead to panic attacks. Phobias are diagnosable mental disorders and can disrupt a person’s ability to function.

Common Phobias

Some of the most common phobias include:

  • Claustrophobia: Fear of confined spaces.
  • Aerophobia: Fear of flying.
  • Arachnophobia: Fear of spiders.
  • Driving phobia: Fear of driving.
  • Emetophobia: Fear of vomiting.
  • Erythrophobia: Fear of blushing.
  • Hypochondria: Fear of illness.
  • Zoophobia: Fear of animals.
  • Aquaphobia: Fear of water.
  • Acrophobia: Fear of heights.
  • BII phobia: Fear of injury involving blood.
  • Escala phobia: Fear of escalators.
  • Tunnel phobia: Fear of tunnels.

As new technologies and societal changes occur, phobias evolve. For example, nomophobia, the fear of being without a cell phone or computer, has recently emerged as a modern concern.

Symptoms of Phobias

Phobias manifest as:

  • Uncontrollable anxiety when exposed to the feared object or situation.
  • A strong need to avoid the source of fear.
  • Inability to function normally when facing the trigger.
  • Recognition that fear is irrational but being unable to control it.
